The Biomass Circular Economy Audit takes a broad, region-wide look at the many organic and residual streams the Upper Murray produces, from food and green organics to dairy effluent, agricultural plastics and food-processing wastewater, and identifies five practical opportunities to turn them into compost, energy, recovered nutrients and other products. It was deliberately wide in scope, so that smaller, lower-cost opportunities aren't overlooked.

The Woody Feedstock and Pyrolysis stream focuses in depth on a single, significant opportunity: converting woody biomass, particularly pine plantation and forestry residue, into biochar and energy through pyrolysis. A completed feedstock audit returned favourable findings, and UMI is now progressing this stream towards a detailed feasibility study and business case.
